Farmer and wife gunned down on their farm
PAULPIETERSBURG – Nico and Mercia Lens was murdered on Wednesday the 03rd September 2014 on their farm in the Paulpietersburg-district of KwaZulu-Natal. Nico and Mercia, both in their fifties, farmed with cattle on a farm between Paulpietersburg and Utrecht.
The couple was attacked on their farm at around 17:00. Nico was attacked outside the farmhouse while Mercia succeeded in pressing a panic button inside the farmhouse. It was however too late by the time the neighbours arrived. Nico’s body was found outside and Mercia’s body was found inside the farmhouse, both were shot through the head.
A local representative of a civil rights organisation said: “The local police only arrived 90 minutes later despite being only 30 km (18.6 miles) from the farm. They were full of excuses and the dog unit only arrived 3 hours later, but apparently it was too dark to search for suspects. Although we do have an aircraft, it is of no use without night-sight equipment. People in the area are shocked about the senseless murders”.
The Lens-couple is survived by a daughter staying in Paulpietersburg.
